Chestnut Cream: The Most Underrated French Pantry Staple

By Molly Wilkinson

Chestnut cream (or crème de marrons) is one of those quietly magical ingredients that deserves far more attention than it gets. Invented in France in 1885 and made out of chestnuts from Ardèche, it's a specialty of the region. It’s sweet chestnut and subtly nutty notes bridge the gap between dessert and everyday indulgence - the kind of thing the French keep tucked away for both lazy afternoons and last-minute entertaining.

I always try to have a can (or three!) in my pantry to make a quick easy dessert or elevate a treat to something truly delicious and special.

If you’ve ever wondered what to actually do with a jar beyond eating it with a spoon (no judgment), here are some of my favorite ways to use chestnut cream. You’ll find that it’s very versatile and super easy to incorporate in your kitchen.

1. Stir It into Coffee for an Instant Chestnut Latte

Think of this like a flavored syrup, but it’s so much better! Add a spoonful of chestnut cream to hot coffee (or a latte), stir, and enjoy! It adds a gentle sweetness and a warm, roasted depth that feels especially perfect on cold mornings.

💡 Tip: If the cream is thick, whisk it with a splash of hot milk first before adding it to your coffee – like a chestnut creamer!

2. Spread It on a Toasted Baguette (With a Chocolate Twist)

This is simplicity at its best. Lightly toast a slice of baguette, or other delicious bread, spread with chestnut cream, and - trust me here - add a few pieces of salted dark chocolate on top. It’s completely addictive.

Perfect for breakfast, le goûter (a sweet afternoon snack) or just a little something with a cup of coffee.

3. A Classic Pairing: Chestnut Cream on Crêpes

Warm crêpes and a generous spread of chestnut cream - that’s it. You can add whipped cream or chocolate if you’d like, but honestly, it’s beautiful all on its own and is a great change from the classic chocolate hazelnut spread.

4. A No-Bake Chestnut Parfait (Elegant & Effortless)

This is so easy to put together and wow is it delicious! Layers of crushed cookies (I love a spiced cookie like Biscoff), chestnut cream, and a large dollop of whipped cream. Spoon into a pretty glass, and you’re set! Finish it with a sprinkle of more cookie crumbs or shaved chocolate.

There aren’t any specific measurements, but for the whipped cream I take cold heavy whipping cream and whip it either by hand or in a mixer with a dash of sugar and vanilla. You want it just slightly sweet to balance well with the chestnut cream.

It’s quick to put together and will always impress whether for a dinner party or just little something sweet any time of day.

Why Chestnut Cream Deserves a Spot in Your Pantry

Chestnut cream is one of the most iconic French ingredients that quietly elevates everything it touches. While there are more complicated desserts like cakes and mousses, I love having a jar in the pantry to quickly add to things to make them an extra special French treat.

Pick some up the next time you see it and you’re never far from something delicious!
