Celebrate the Fête de la Musique (June 21st) with our gourmet playlist! From cult French classics with food-filled lyrics to iconic feel-good tracks, Taste France Magazine’s selection is the perfect soundtrack for a French-style dinner at home, a picnic or a summer apéritif.
Every year on 21 June, France celebrates music in the most joyful way possible – outdoors, in the streets, and open to everyone. The Fête de la Musique transforms cities, towns and neighbourhoods into giant open-air stages, with performances ranging from amateur musicians to established artists. To mark the occasion, we’ve created a foodie playlist that feels very Taste France – playful, a little eclectic, and, of course, full of delicious references to food, conviviality and the French art of living.
What is the Fête de la Musique?
Created in France in 1982, the Fête de la Musique was imagined as a free celebration where anyone could perform and everyone could enjoy live music. Held every year on the summer solstice, it has since become one of France’s most iconic cultural events. Over the years, the celebration has spread far beyond France, thanks in part to the work of French embassies, consulates and Institut Français around the world, as well as the wider network of the Alliance Française.
Cornichons, mustard, chicken, beer, macarons… Sounds like a shopping list for a picnic? It is actually the opening mood of our playlist, thanks to Nino Ferrer’s delightfully absurd classic Les Cornichons. From the instantly evocative Ratatouille’s theme song Le Festin to the sing-along nostalgia of Champagne Supernova by Oasis or the catchy charm of Rosalia’s Sauvignon Blanc, this playlist moves between French classics, pop culture favourites and internationally loved tracks with one thing in common – a shared love of food and French gastronomy!
Designed as the ideal soundtrack to a French-style dinner at home, it brings together songs that are playful, elegant, comforting and just a little bit indulgent – much like the best meals themselves. Whether you are setting the table for a long summer supper, planning a relaxed apéritif, or putting together a picnic to enjoy with friends, this is a playlist made for good food, good company and a little extra joie de vivre.
