It’s no secret that New York City is home to some of the best wine bars in the world. From bright and buzzy hotspots to cozy hole-in-the-wall joints, NYC’s wine bar scene spans the gamut of styles and ambiances—though across the board, a selection of serious French wines is the thread that ties the greats together. Whether seeking out a post-work glass of Burgundy or Champagne, or sitting down for a bottle of French wine before dinner, we’ve rounded up five of the best wine bars in New York City for French wines.
Chambers - TriBeCa
📍 94 Chambers St #1
For wine lovers based in (or visiting) New York, a stop at Chambers is an absolute must. Lauded for having one of the city’s most well-curated, value-forward wine lists—unsurprisingly so, with Master Sommelier Pascaline Lepeltier spearheading the selection—this cozy downtown downtown spot is equally known for its creative farm-to-table dishes, crafted by Chef Jon Karis (previously of Gramercy Tavern). Although more restaurant than watering hole, curious drinkers can easily pop in and grab a seat at Chambers’ bar—though be sure to allot ample time to explore Lepeltier’s 90+ page list, featuring ample selections from Burgundy, Jura, and the Loire Valley (as well as two full pages dedicated entirely to Chartreuse!)
La Compagnie Flatiron - Flatiron District
📍 6 W 24th St
Following the massive success of its first location in Nolita, La Compagnie opened the doors to its second French-inspired wine bar in 2024. Located just around the corner from the Flatiron building, this well-stocked wine bar highlights bottles from all across France, including epic selections from Burgundy and Champagne, with a focus on natural wine and low-intervention producers. The bar’s warm ambiance and parquet floors evoke feelings of the classic Parisian bar à vin, complete with exposed brick walls, a marble bar, and velvet banquettes. La Compagnie equally highlights a selection of inclusive beverages, including non-alcoholic wines and zero-proof cocktails.
Aldo Sohm Wine Bar - Midtown West
📍 151 W 51st St
In a sea of mediocre Midtown drinking spots, Aldo Sohm Wine Bar saves the day. Founded by Le Bernardin’s in-house Master Sommelier, this welcoming wine bar—modeled after Sohm’s own living room—offers a welcome reprieve from the bustling streets surrounding Rockefeller Center. In addition to Sohm’s French-focused wine list, the bar pours around 40 wines by the glass daily, many of which are French, as well as monthly wine flights for those looking to try a variety of things. Beyond the glass, Aldo Sohm’s bar bites are equally French inspired—think duck foie gras, baked camembert, and salmon rillettes served with toasted baguette.
Lei - Chinatown
📍 15-17 Doyers St
Few new wine bars have garnered such high praise as Lei—and rightfully so. Founded by sommelier and restaurateur Annie Shi (of King and Jupiter), this snug Chinatown wine bar features an impeccably curated list and elevated Chinese small plates, including sesame shao bing, cabbage with yuba and morels in shallot broth, and a signature Chinese omelette with aged white jade radish and scallion oil—all of which pair perfectly with Shi’s impressive selection of Grower Champagne. Whether stopping in for a French glass or looking to make a meal out of the experience, Lei is the perfect place for casual date nights or gathering with friends—though with just 28 seats available, the space fills up quickly. Reservations are highly recommended.
Parcelle - Greenwhich Village
📍 72 MacDougal St
Although Parcelle only opened its doors in July 2024, the bar has become a neighborhood staple for downtown dwellers. Situated in the heart of Greenwich Village, the program is overseen by Grant Reynolds, the brains behind Parcelle Wine, known for its retail offerings and in-person experiences—meaning if you fall in love with a bottle at the bar, you’ll likely be able to grab one for home. Parcelle’s French-heavy list spans 500+ selections, featuring everything from back-vintage classics to up-and-coming natural wines. Should the weather permit, grab a table outdoors and pair your favorite French bottle with some seriously unforgettable people watching.
