South Kensington: A London Local Guide to the Frenchiest Neighbourhood in Town
Explore South Kensington, the French London neighbourhood. Between its institutions, food culture, and long-standing community, it offers one of the most authentic slices of France in London. Whether you’re here for a buttery croissant, a literary escape, or a full brasserie experience, this neighbourhood proves that French art de vivre travels very well.
If there’s one corner of London where French culture feels truly at home, it’s South Kensington. From the iconic Institut Français to neighbourhood épiceries and pâtisseries, this elegant pocket of the city offers a genuine taste of France. No Eurostar required. Here are a few of our favourite ways to spend a perfectly French day in SW7 and beyond.
Gazette Brasserie
Set inside the Institut Français, Gazette Brasserie is part of a small group of authentic French brasseries spread across the city. Whether you’re dropping in after a film at Ciné Lumière or meeting friends for a long lunch, it delivers that unmistakable Parisian brasserie atmosphere.
Expect comforting French classics by chef Pascal Even from the monthly-changing menu: hand-cut beef tartare prepped at the table, onion soup, French snails and frogs’ legs à la Provençale, a generous cheese platter with the likes of Brie de Meaux and Roquefort PDO, an indulgent rum baba and French wines to round it all up. Kids will happily sink their teeth into the ham and cheese crêpe. Everything is made in-house, from terrines to sauces, using trusted French suppliers.

Petrossian UK
Founded in 1920 in Paris, Petrossian brings a refined sense of indulgence to South Kensington, with a distinctly French twist. While the name is synonymous with caviar, here you’ll also find a curated selection of French delicacies that go far beyond luxury.
Look out for products that showcase France’s rich terroir: French caviar from Aquitaine, tarama jazzed up with Menton IGP lemon, sardine rillettes with Espelette pepper PDO, anchovies from the Bay of Biscay, Camargue fleur de sel with black truffle, and even Cognac-infused chocolate pearls.
It’s the perfect deli to build a fancy picnic, or pick up a gourmet souvenir. At the café, you can also indulge in a very chic, French caviar Baeri Baïka® brunch or a generous slice of French artisanal foie gras.

Aux Merveilleux
Step inside Aux Merveilleux de Fred pastry shop and you’re instantly transported to another era. These tiny and delicate meringue treats evoke a specific period in French history: high society life during the Directory regime. The aristocratic Incroyables and Merveilleuses, as they were known at the time, would gather in salons to discuss politics and economics. But their main objective there was to see and be seen, to drink tea and eat cakes.
The star here is the Merveilleux, an airy meringue cake filled with whipped cream and coated in delicate toppings like shavings of dark chocolate or crushed caramelised almonds and hazelnuts.
Created by pastry chef Frédéric Vaucamps, these light, cloud-like treats are named after the aristocratic Incroyables and Merveilleuses, who would gather in the elegant salons of French high society during the Directory regime.
Since 2009, these delicacies have made their way from New York to Madrid, Dubai to Berlin, and Tokyo to London. Freshly made in-store throughout the day, they're crafted using traditional techniques and high-quality French ingredients. Watch the pastries being assembled before your eyes, then take a box to share (or not).

Chanteroy
A staple of the French community since 1998, Chanteroy is where local French expats go for everyday essentials they crave from home. Think baguettes, cheese and charcuterie, rabbit or andouillette, Ratte potatoes, shelled walnuts… and all the classic supermarket favourites you’d expect to find in France.
Salted butter and French jam for le petit déjeuner, sweet treats for le goûter, herbes de Provence Label Rouge, garlic croûtons or rouille sauce for a quick dinner prep… It’s not flashy, but that’s exactly the point. Authentic, practical, and deeply rooted in daily French life. They even deliver across London boroughs!
