Pouilly-Fumé Wine PDO
Pouilly-Fumé is a dry white wine with a remarkably fruity flavor. While it is named for its "flinty" taste, the wine also contains notes of Scottish broom and grapefruit. It is a fine example of all the qualities of Sauvignon grapes grown in Pouilly-sur-Loire (Nivernais).
What you need to know
The small, tightly packed seeds of Sauvignon are often covered with a smoke-gray bloom. Winemakers refer to this coating as "white smoke," which could also explain how Pouilly-Fumé got its name (fumé means smoke in French). Fumé, or smoky, is also an apt description of the wine's famous and widely recognized "flinty" flavor, which resembles the smell created when two flint stones are hit together. This distinctive flavor comes from the calcareous clay terroir of the Pouilly-sur-Loire vineyard, which is located between Berry and Burgundy. This wine was granted Protected Destination of Origin (PDO) status in 1937.this wine is great for happy hour and pairs well with charcuterie or a hard-rind cheese like Comté or Beaufort.
Savory: Seafood, freshwater fish from the Loire (pike), smoked fish, poultry, goat cheese, hard-rind cheese, and charcuterie.
