Where to feast on cheese that’ll make your heart melt in London

By Valentine Benoist

Yes, it’s getting cold, dark and rainy. But don’t let the weather set the mood! The French have long found the best remedy to get through this time of year: turns out melted cheese has incredibly comforting properties. Here are a few of our favourite cures in London.

Chez Antoinette: a cheesy croque

If you’re not yet familiar with the French croque, let Antoinette introduce you two: in its croque monsieur traditional version, your melted cheese and ham gently sit between two generous slices of toasted sourdough. Brunch it up with an extra sunny-side-up egg on top to make it a croque madame, or go veggie with the mushroom-filled croque forestier — both just as cheesy. And if it’s not enough, add in a whole baked camembert.

La Petite Ferme: no limits to your love of cheese

Skip lunch that day, this cosy French bistro by Exmouth Market takes raclette night very seriously. £27 per person will get your gang on all-you-can-eat raclette feast, along with cured meats, spuds and pickles. Yes you’ve read right, we’re talking unlimited melted morbier and raclette cheese heaven.

If by some miracle you happen to still have some room left after that, dig in the half-baked chocolate cake.

For a taste of the Alps tucked away in a Brixton shipping container, look no further: this Savoyard restaurant will make your wildest cheesy dreams come true. Start off with crozet dippers with chilli tomato sauce, but make sure to save some room for the best British twist that ever happened to French fondue: the traditional blend of gruyère, emmentaland raclette is jazzed up with a good chunk of Lincolnshire poacher. Dip unlimited baguette bits and pickles into this magical golden mixture. Remember, you must fish them out carefully!
