What you need to know
This plump and firm fruit has a reddish-brown skin covered in a silky, fibrous fuzz. The inside is a bright green with black seeds near the center. It's not often that you see this type of color in a type of sweet fruit! It is sold fresh and typically in bulk. Kiwis can be harvested at such a late date thanks to the mild microclimate and ideal soils
present in Pays de l'Adour. The harvest season starts in late October when the kiwis are fully mature. This means the fruit is at its tastiest and can be stored for long periods of time. In fact, Adour kiwis have a distinctive taste due to the high levels of sugar present in the fruit.
The hand-picked kiwis are packaged and stored within the PGI in refrigerated rooms and sold as they ripen until the end of May.
The kiwi is the fruit of a subtropical plant (Actinidia deliciosa) that originated in China. New Zealand farmers were the first to cultivate the plant for its fruit in the early 20th century. After the 1970s, kiwi production came to France and was adopted in Pays de l'Adour. Today, these farms account for a quarter of the country's production and have both PGI and Red Label certification due to the unique qualities of the fruit.
The kiwi is rich in fiber, magnesium, and vitamin C. In fact, a single fruit will meet your recommended daily value for vitamin C. It is also a great source of vitamin B9. A kiwi typically weighs 3.5 ounces and contains 58.5 calories per fruit.
How to use
Storage Adour Kiwis
If it is very firm, kiwis will continue to ripen for 2-3 weeks in a bag or box that is left slightly open in your refrigerator's crisper drawer.
Cooking and serving Adour Kiwi
They are delicious when served uncooked in a sweet or savory salad, carpaccio, or on a tartare with fish or seafood. You can also cook them to make jam or chutney.
Tasting tips Adour Kiwis
After cutting them in half lengthwise, scoop out the inside of the kiwi with a spoon.
White spirits: pisco
Sweet: vanilla, chocolate, mangoes, and ginger.
Savory: shellfish, king scallops, fromage frais, fresh or smoked fish, and white meat.
