Heat the oven to 375˚F.

Heat a large ovenproof sauté pan over medium-low heat. Melt the butter with the garlic. When the butter starts to brown, add the mushrooms and sear until golden on each side. Set aside on a tray lined with paper towels.

Meanwhile, spread both sides of each bread slice with the mayonnaise.

Divide the cheese and mushrooms evenly on 2 slices of bread, and close with the remaining 2 slices of bread.

Place the sandwiches in the pan used for the mushrooms and cook until the cheese is about halfway melted. Then use a spatula to flip the sandwiches over and then put the pan in the oven. Bake until both sides of the sandwiches are crusty, and the cheese is melted, about 8 minutes.

Remove from the oven. Cut the sandwiches diagonally with a serrated knife and serve.
